Summit Baptist Church is made up of believers who have joined together to worship and serve Jesus Christ with their lives.
Our Affiliations
We are Christians first but we have partnered with other believers of a specific
denomination to maximize our ministry efforts. We are part of the Great Commission Partnership Baptist Association, which is a partnership of churches located in eastern Colorado. This also means we are associated with the Colorado Baptist General Convention, located in Centennial, Colorado. All of these affiliations are part of the Southern Baptist Convention, of which we are a part.
Our Beliefs
We hold to the Baptist Faith and Message (2000).
Our Beginnings
Summit Baptist Church traces its beginnings to prayer meetings held on Saturday nights in the early 1970's expressing a desire for an evangelical church in Wiggins. The first Bible study was held in the fall of 1973 by a group from Lockney, Texas. They were brought in by Calvary Baptist Church of Fort Morgan, who sponsored Calvary Baptist Mission of Wiggins. On March 25, 1973, the first worship service was held in the American Legion Hall and soon after, Sunday School was added.
The First Baptist Church of Summit, Mississippi helped with Bible Schools and other projects in those early years, and so the name Summit Baptist Church was chosen when the church was constituted in 1975. The name also fit the location on Ridge Street, one of the highest spots in Wiggins. When Summit Baptist Church was constituted on February 11, 1975, there were 30 charter members.
Our Construction
The building committee brought recommendations for a new 40'X76' metal building on a concrete slab for the purpose of a church building. The dimensions were later changed to 40'X101' and construction of the steel shell began in July 1975. Fifteen families of volunteers from Builders for Christ came from Texas and began work while the steel shell was in progress. The first regular Sunday morning worship services were held on September 7, 1975.
In 1993, just under three acres north of the original building were purchased. Construction on a new educational building began in 1995 and was completed in 2000. It was an amazing adventure to see how God worked again in providing a place for ministry. Over 40 people had shared a study of Experiencing God: Knowing and Doing the Will of God. Less than one year after the building was completed, it was also debt free! It has greatly enhanced our ability to minister to our community.
In May 2010, we began a new phase of construction. We began work to add a 76'X91' sanctuary to our education building. We hope to be able to seat at least 300 and use this new sanctuary as a tool to reach those in our community. See www.summitsanctuary.org for more information.
Our Legacy
The greatest testimonies are not in the building and properties. They are in our members' hearts and lives. The members and friends of Summit Baptist Church are the real story: how God has worked to bring many to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ; how many people have been ministered to in times of loss and sadness; how many times of rejoicing have been shared through showers, weddings, child dedications, baptisms, Sunday School groups, and on and on. That is what is to important about God placing Summit Baptist Church in Wiggins, Colorado. Our legacy is to be a beacon of God's light in this dark world, to show God's love through us.
